Most people go to Nashville for the music. That wasn’t my enticement, as I never cared much for country music. Frankly, I’ve always been a bit dismissive of it. I do enjoy the country/rock blend songs such as those by Old Crow Medicine Show and Alabama Shakes. And admittedly, I fell in love with Johnny Cash’s song, Hurt, a cover of an original song by Nine Inch Nails, back in 2007. For a period, I listened to it repeatedly, as I do when I fall in love with a song. I figured if I ever went to Nashville, I’d have to pay tribute to Johnny at his namesake museum.

My roundabout call to Nashville came by way of books set in far-flung places, nowhere near the city of music. These stories told of: an opera singer and terrorists in an unnamed South American country; pharmaceutical company doctors journeying into the Amazon; two writers and their lifelong friendship; unwed mothers in a home in Kentucky; and a husband and wife taking a road trip in a Winnebago to the Badlands, South Dakota.
These tales are told by Ann Patchett, who Bel Canto in 2013, and, shortly after, This is the Story of a Happy Marriage, a book of essays about the writing life, her marriage, and her love of her dog, her grandmother and the nun who taught her reading and writing in elementary school. As an unpublished writer myself, I enjoyed reading of her struggles and successes with writing, and her admonishment that there’s no such thing as writer’s block, only procrastination! She holds strong convictions about writing, family, friends, books, and her independent bookstore, Parnassus Books, billed as “An Independent Bookstore for Independent People.” Someday, I simply had to visit her bookstore in Nashville (and maybe get to meet her!).

Later, I read more of Patchett’s books, The Patron Saint of Liars in early 2014, State of Wonder in 2016, and Truth and Beauty , about her friendship with the late Lucy Grealy, in 2017. Though the novels don’t take place in Nashville, the two non-fiction books reveal her ties to and love of the city.
The thing that clinched the deal for me was watching Big Little Lies, with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, both of whom live in Nashville. Enthralled, I watched the entire series, actually set in Monterey, California, on a plane flight to Hungary. Nicole Kidman appeared on the CBS Sunday Morning show, talking about her life in Nashville with her husband, country singer Keith Urban. Later, I watched as both actresses made the rounds on the late night shows. That was it. I was hooked. I simply had to go to Nashville.
Talking my husband into taking off work for five days, two of which would be spent driving 10 hours through two states, Virginia and Tennessee, was no easy feat. Lucky for me, he eventually came around after getting caught up in my enthusiasm.
I’m always excited for a road trip. 🙂

“THE CALL TO PLACE” INVITATION: I invite you to write a 500-word (or less) post on your own blog about what enticed you to choose a recently visited or a future particular destination. If you don’t have a blog, I invite you to write in the comments. If your destination is a place you love and keep returning to, feel free to write about that. This time, you have two weeks! If you want to see the original post about the subject, you can check it out here: imaginings: the call to place.
Please include the link in the comments below by Wednesday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. EST. When I write my post in response to this challenge on Thursday, April 12, I’ll include your links in that post. If you’d like, you can use the hashtag #wanderessence.
My next post will be about Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
This will be an ongoing invitation, bi-weekly in April, and monthly (on the 4th Thursday of each month) after that. Feel free to jump in at any time. 🙂
I hope you’ll join in our community. I look forward to reading your posts!

the ~ wander.essence ~ community
I invite you all to settle in and read a few posts from our wandering community. I promise, you’ll be inspired!
- Shiarrael, of Tales from the Romulan Neutral Zone, shares about her family road trip in Austria, and the clever banter between her and her teenage children. We can all relate. Be prepared to enjoy a few laughs. 🙂
- Pam, of Roughwighting, writes about her experience with her mother on the Jersey Shore and why she is called to return year after year. I love her poignant and amusing experience.
- Sue, of WordsVisual, writes a reminiscent post about her call to the coast in Sidmouth, Devon, South West England. She writes about her experience, accompanied by a poem and photo.
- Jo, of Restless Jo, writes of her love affair with Tavira, Portugal, soon to become her permanent home. Having visited her there, I know firsthand of her enthusiasm for Tavira, but I love how she’s written so beautifully of her memories and of all the things that bring her joy about that place.
Thanks to all of you who wrote posts about a call to place. 🙂
Did you get to meet the lady herself, Cathy? You’ve got me wanting to read all those books now. Never enough hours in the day. We’re just back from a trip up the coast, making the most of a sunny day before it busys up for Easter. 🙂 🙂 Thanks so much for the lovely mention! When will you need the next post- 4th or 11th? Not sure which fortnight you’re posting in April. Have a wonderful Easter, hon. I’m sure you’ll be out and about somewhere.

Sadly, Jo, I didn’t get to meet Ann Patchett. I was really hoping to run into her but she wasn’t there; I did buy a lot of books from her bookstore though! 🙂 Maybe she was home writing a new book!
Your trip up the coast sounds fun. Can’t wait to read about that.
So the next post on this topic (a call to place) will be on the 12th (two weeks – I’ll eventually get to once a month). I’ll always put the deadline at the end of the relevant post. In this case: by Wednesday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. EST. I’ll write my post in response to this challenge on Thursday, April 12. I can’t keep up with this pace of writing, so I want to get it down to more reasonable pacing before long!
Have a Happy Easter, Jo! We don’t have anything exciting planned at the moment, but I never know what will come up! You know it’s Easter and April Fool’s Day all at once? 🙂 xx

Yes, I do, Cathy 🙂 🙂 We’re not sure if we’ll be visiting James in Leeds on that day. He likes to keep us in suspence. If the weather is ok we might be doing an Easter egg hunt but the forecast isn’t great.
Fortnightly/monthly suits me better anyway, Cathy. I like your challenge but I have my own agenda and if I keep going on ‘side trips’ on your challenge I’ll never get there. 🙂 🙂

I hope you have good weather, Jo, and get that Easter Egg hunt. xx
I know we do all have our own agendas, Jo, so please don’t ever feel compelled to participate. Do it when you feel so inclined, otherwise, just skip it. That’s what I do, and I expect everyone else to do the same. So welcome when you can, and when you can’t or don’t feel inspired, then keep pursuing your own dreams. We have to do whatever makes us sing! 🙂

So nice to be part of the wonder.essence community. Thanks for including my link about my walk on a beach. I’ve already has several people visit because of it. And I am making the rounds to the others that you link here.
Now, about Nashville – I would visit that city exactly for the reason you did. I love love love all of Ann Patchett’s books, and I’ve read every single one. I’m so inspired by her decision to open and operate a bookstore. One of my good college friends (who is a small Indie publisher) was so inspired that she also opened her own bookstore in the city where she lives – Tuscaloosa AL. Now THAT would be an interesting place to write about. The bookstore is warm and comfy and inviting. I traveled there last April to celebrate the publication of my first children’s illustrated book BIRDS OF PARADISE. My friend the bookstore owner publicized the event and we sold a LOT of my books. Wonderful experience.

Thanks, Pam. The community is small now, but I do hope it grows. I’m glad you got extra visitors from the link.
I’m so glad to find another Ann Patchett lover. I haven’t read every one of her books, but enough of them to know I love her writing. It’s interesting how your college friend was inspired by her to open her own bookstore. And how exciting that you published a children’s illustrated book! It sounds like a fantastic experience all around. Congratulations on that book. 🙂

I recognised the first two book descriptions immediately! A friend recommended Bel Canto (wonderful!) and since then I have read State of Wonder and Run. I knew nothing about Ann Patchett though – I’m very interested to read about the book shop in Nashville. Maybe someday I’ll visit too.

I haven’t read Run, Anabel, but I loved Bel Canto and especially State of Wonder. You would love This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage to learn more about Ann Patchett. I highly recommend that one. And her friendship with Lucy Grealy too.
By the way, we absolutely loved Nashville, but not for the reasons I wanted to go! I highly recommend you visit it if you can. I was very surprised how much fun we had, and despite not being a country music fan, it was all because of the music! I’ll talk more about that in later posts. 🙂 I love when places and experiences surprise and delight me!

I think Bel Canto was my favourite of the three I’ve read. I’ll need to look out for the others. I will add Nashville to my list for when America is back on the agenda.

You have spiked my interest in Ann Patchett Cathy I must do a library search for her books. Jack is a big Blues music fan so we sort of followed the blues trail around America when we visited in 1992. A months Delta airline pass and hopping on and off planes criss crossing the country. So easy back then no tight security checks. Or terrorist worries.

Every time I hear from you, Pauline, I am inspired by something else you’ve done. Your road trip in Matilda was inspiring enough, and then you mention your camel ride and bike ride, and now you have this blues trail “pilgrimage.” You really are an inspiration! Ideas, ideas, ideas. I love them all.
As for Ann Patchett, it depends what kinds of things you like, but since I like stories set in exotic lands, I really loved State of Wonder and Bel Canto. But for a real life look at the writer’s life, I loved This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage.
Happy Easter!

You’re lucky to have started at an earlier age, Pauline. I didn’t start seriously traveling until I was 50, and now, at 62, I’m trying to desperately make up for all the time I missed! I hope you enjoy Ann Patchett. 🙂

I love the concept of this challenge (so many places that call me) and enjoyed reading about your many reasons to visit Nashville. Like you, I’m not into country music, but you’ve given me plenty of reasons to stop whenever we roam about in that area again! Plus, you peaked my curiosity about those two famous actresses, and that very accomplished writer. Also, like yourself, I’m an unpublished (non-fiction) writer, ready to be inspired and intrigued by great examples. 🙂 I’m glad Jo sent me here.
