We explored Minnesota as part of our Great Lakes Road Trip in May-June of 2021. Our explorations included Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Northern Minnesota is all about Lake Superior and the shipping, mining, lumber and fur trading industries. It is about voyageurs and outdoorsmen: canoe paddlers, campers and traders. It is about 12,000 lakes, pictographs at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), aerial lift bridges, the charming Stillwater on the St. Croix River, and ruins of a 130-year-old sandstone quarry along the Kettle River. It is about Frank Lloyd Wright gas stations, railroad museums, and famous football players such as Bronko Nagurski. It is about Dorothy Molter, aka the Root Beer Lady.
In Duluth, we watched the James R. Barker, the first 1000-foot class vessel constructed entirely on the Great Lakes in 1976, pass through the Aerial Lift Bridge, which spans the Duluth Ship Canal. The 1,000-ton central span rises 138 feet like an elevator to let ships enter the harbor. We saw a huge collection of rolling stock at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. And returning to Duluth after our exploration of the North Shore, we enjoyed a seaplane ride over the largest and busiest port on the Great Lakes, with views of the Aerial Lift Bridge and the surrounding metro area. To top it all off, we had dinner at Bridgeman’s, a mid-century modern diner complete with a Friday night fish fry and a raspberry hot fudge wonder.
Here are my top ten favorite experiences of northern Minnesota:
10) hiking the Quarry Loop Trail at Banning State Park
9) Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
8) dinner at the iconic Bridgeman’s in Duluth
7) Stillwater, the charming self-proclaimed “Birthplace of Minnesota”
6) Voyageur’s National Park and the Arrowhead Lodge
5) Palisade Head on the North Shore
4) Tettegouche State Park
3) Duluth and the Aerial Lift Bridge: watching the huge cargo ships go through the bridge
2) Canoeing on Hegman Lake in Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW)
1) Seaplane tour of Duluth with Beaver Air

There is a lot to see, Jo. Some more worthwhile than others. My hope is that I’ll see it all before I die! Time is running out. π

Wow, wow, wow! Stunning photos of the beauty in Minnesota! Loved the aerial shots towards the end. We went to a lot of the same places like the fish store and state parks. Interesting to see your photos of the waterfalls in spring compared to mine at the end of summer with our drought. So that’s what the waterfalls at Tettegouche look like in full force! We’re talking about going back up there this spring. One minor thing: Stillwater is in the twin cities, about 20 minutes from my house π I’m going to subscribe to your channel as lately I’ve been watching more youtube videos than checking out blogs. I’m up in the middle of the night and remembered that I hadn’t seen your northern MN post. So glad you enjoyed my state!

I’m so glad you enjoyed the video of Northern Minnesota. I know Stillwater is kind of an extension of the Twin Cities, but had to pick a dividing point somewhere and I had more pics in the south than north, so I appended it here.
That plane ride in Duluth was fabulous. We loved the aerial views. We also loved watching the big ships go through the Aerial Lift Bridge. Our hotel was right next to it.
I know I need to get over to your blog and check out your North Shore trip. I hope to do it soon. We just got back from 3 weeks in South Florida; hopefully I’ll get caught up on stuff soon. Looking forward to seeing you in May. And congrats on your retirement. π

Loved all the photos of your Florida trip! We just booked another 4 nights on the North Shore for the end of June. Hoping to see fuller waterfalls! And thanks for reminding me that I need to do day 4 of our trip last summer π Agreed, looking forward to May. Yay!

Thanks about the pics from our Florida trip. It was really fun to spend some time exploring that southern part of the state. It had been so long since I’d been there. 1979 in the Keys for my first honeymoon, and in the mid-90s for Disney World (ugh) with the boys. This was much more enjoyable. Sounds fun to go back to the North Shore. I hope you’ll get your flowing waterfalls this time. See you before too long. π
