Here are my art journal spreads from my “Road Trip to Nowhere” trip on September 6, 2019; on this day, I traveled from Norfolk, Nebraska to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The first three pages are from the journal as I was traveling.Β The last page is the art spread I did upon returning home.
Here are my art journal spreads from September 7, 2019, when I was in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Here, the first two pages are from the real-time journal, while the third page was done after my travels.
Here are my art journal spreads from September 8, 2019, when I traveled from Sioux Falls to Watertown, South Dakota. Here only the first page is from the journal as I was traveling.

βART JOURNALβ INVITATION: I invite you to post a journal spread on your own blog about your travels. You can do collage, watercolor, acrylics, stamps, drawing or stencils β whatever art form your heart desires.Β These are my first art journal spreads and drawings, so I can only hope Iβll become more creative as I practice and play. I invite you to do the same!
One of my intentions for my “Road Trip to Nowhere” in September of 2019 was to “Make art journal spreads for each state (Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado) through collage, drawing or collecting items.”Β I’m having so much fun with this that I’ve decided to make a journal spread for each day of my journey.
If youβd like some ideas on creating an art journal, please see my page: on creating art from travels.Β I actually donβt have many ideas yet, but I hope to add more as I experiment with different art forms.Β Also, I would love to see any great ideas from the artists out there. Feel free to add a link to your own blog if you do bullet or travel journals of your own.
Include the link in the comments below by Thursday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m. EST.Β When I write my post in response to this challenge on Friday, May 8, Iβll include your links in that post.
This will be an ongoing invitation, once on the second Friday of each month. Feel free to jump in at any time. π
I hope youβll join in our community. I look forward to reading your posts!

Thanks to all of you who shared posts on the βart journal spreadsβ invitation.
I love seeing your journal pages, Cathy. They really show another side to you. Very clever.

What a colourful journal and such an amazing way to commemorate your journey! This way, one never needs an electronic device to power up and dive into your memories. Great going!

Thank you so much, Sheetal. It’s a lot of fun to do these pages, although they always fall short of how I imagine them! π

You put so much effort into your travels, Cathy! You always amaze me. π π Despite life as we currently know it, I hope you can have a peaceful Easter, and escape into your travel world. And I hope your health is better. Sending hugs!

Thank you so much, Jo. They’re fun to do, and add something a little different than my normal run-of-the-mill travel essays. As for my health, I think I am starting to turn the corner, feeling a bit better now. I hope I’m on the upturn.
I hope you have a happy and blessed Easter too.

I loved looking at these! I need to do this on my next trip – actually take my journal with me instead of trying to complete it once I am home.

Thank you so much, Colline. They are so much fun to do, and I can remember so much more when I write in my journal each day and evening while traveling. If I waited till I got home, I wouldn’t remember a thing. π

I really love your style and how much detail you include, great memories, I am going to start putting more on my pages. What size sketch book do you use.? Now I have more time (a benefit of this close down!!!) I can scroll back through my memories. https://wordpress.com/post/retiredfromgypsylife.wordpress.com/5227

Thank you so much, Pauline. I love your sketches and watercolors so much more than what I do, but I hope to expand by practicing more in the coming months. I haven’t been using a sketchbook for these journal pages; it is just a normal lined-page journal (9″ x 7 1/2″). I think I need to take a sketchbook along next time. I do include a lot of details so I can remember and relive my journey.
I’ve visited your wonderful post from my phone, but I will spend more time on it soon; I loved what I saw and can’t wait to link it to my next post. I’ll comment directly on your page. Thank you so much for sharing, Pauline. You’re definitely an inspiration for me. π

Your style is more of a dairy with your delightful sketches as detail, I love this style. If you want to do more watercolour sketching you will need to find a sketch book with thicker paper, 210gsm or higher. The one I used for the journal in this post was a Winsor & Newton 300gsm, but they are expensive so I usually use a less weight journal and for line and wash, which I do more of now, it is adequate. Having more time now for hobbies is one of the bonuses of this shut down period. I hope more people join this invitation. I like to see other peoples styles.

Yes, Pauline, my journal is more of a diary, where I record what I see while I travel. Most of the time, it’s written rather than drawn. If I’m going to do more watercolor sketching, I’ll definitely have to use a different journal for that.
I’d love to see other people’s styles too, so I hope more people will join.
