Winslow, Arizona is home to the American treasure, La Posada (“the resting place”) Hotel.Β The finest and most expensive hotel built in 1930 for the Santa Fe Railroad Co., it was designed by female architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Coulter, often called the “grandmother of American Southwest architecture.”
It is often referred to as Fred Harvey’s last great railroad hotel.Β Fred Harvey βcivilized the westβ by introducing linen, silverware, china, crystal, and impeccable service to railroad travel. He developed and ran all the hotels and restaurants of the Santa Fe Railway, eventually controlling a hospitality empire that spanned the continent, according to La Posada’s website.
Originally called the Winslow Harvey House, the hotel closed in 1957 due to the decline of American railroad travel. Used as offices for the Santa Fe Railway until 1994, it was doomed for demolition.Β It was bought and restored by Allan Affeldt and is now a luxury hotel.

βPHOTOGRAPHYβ INVITATION:Β I invite you to create a photography intention and then create a blog post for a place you have visited. Alternately, you can post a thematic post about a place, photos of whatever you discovered that set your heart afire. You can also do a thematic post of something you have found throughout all your travels: churches, doors, people reading, people hiking, mountains, patterns, all black & white, whatever!
You probably have your own ideas about this, but in case youβd like some ideas, you can visit my page: photography inspiration.
I challenge you to post no more than 20 photos (fewer is better) and to write less than 350-400 words about any travel-related photography intention you set for yourself. Include the link in the comments below by Wednesday, August 15 at 1:00 p.m. EST.Β When I write my post in response to this challenge on Thursday, August 16, Iβll include your links in that post.
This will be an ongoing invitation, every first and third Thursday of each month. Feel free to jump in at any time. π
I hope youβll join in our community. I look forward to reading your posts!
the ~ wander.essence ~ community
I invite you all to settle in and read a few posts from our wandering community.Β I promise, youβll be inspired!
- Ulli, of BANACTEE, posted about a place that no longer exists except in our imaginations.
- Pauline, of Living in Paradise…, posted some colorful pictures and funny stories about her visit to the Maleny Botanic Gardens and the Bird World.
- Jo, of Restless Jo, took some beautiful sunrise photos during a walk along the salt pans in Tavira.
- Jude, of Travel Words, posted a photo essay capturing the essence of South Beach – its architecture and palm trees – in Miami, Florida.
- Sue, of WordsVisual, challenged herself to take her photography up a notch by capturing implied motion, silhouettes, one person, and intentional camera movement (ICM):
Thanks to all of you who shared posts on the βphotographyβ invitation. π
What a great-looking place, Cathy! I love all the arches and the furnishings and artwork are all so interesting. You could have a great browse around- as you did! Lots of beautiful captures. Thanks a lot for linking me. π π

Thanks, Jo. I didn’t stay at this hotel, but it’s a place that welcomes tourists to come in and look around. I wish I could have stayed here! π

You stayed there? Just as well I didnβt get round to my photographic link. Potato Point council chuck-out heaps would definitely have been from the wrong side of the tracks! A great feel for the hotel and its history.

No, Meg, I didn’t stay here. They welcome tourists here, so I just went in to have a look around. I wish! My next post is on hoodoos and badlands – that might be a good fit for your chuck-out heaps!

Thanks, Gilly. I had a good time myself in the gift shop, where I bought a really cool wooden cross. π

Great to know that history was preserved in this luxurious hotel. I smiled at the poster of βsinners hotelβ with the very smug looking couple in the sports car. A story could be built around that image! Thanks for the link.

Thanks, Pauline. I’m glad someone preserved it too. That is a hilarious picture, isn’t it? I like that idea, to write a story or poem using that image. That would be a fun challenge! π

Thanks so much, Mari. It was a nice place to drop in and have a wander. Sadly, my budget was beneath places such as this! π

Nope, too expensive for me, Jude. I was on a budget since I was traveling for 3 weeks, and since I have my upcoming Camino/Portugal trip. I did love wandering through though. π

This is where we stayed in Winslow – just the one night as a treat. The restaurant was fabulous too.

I bet it was a great experience. I ended up staying in Holbrook, so Winslow would have been too early a stop for me, since I’d just left Flagstaff that morning. Besides, I was on a budget. π¦

La Posada wasn’t even on my itinerary, Lynn, so it was a lovely surprise to find it and wander through. Did you stay there? I was on my way to Holbrook, so I didn’t have the pleasure of staying there. π
